Is this good English?

UNSW Institute of Languages is the oldest language centre in Australia which means of course that it was the first language centre established in Australia. In it's 2007/2008 prospectus, I found this -

The UNSW Institute of Languages, established in 1966, is the first and most comprehensive language education organisation in Australia.

Help me. Okay, I can't find one person who uses the word prideful instead of proud. I have a roomate who uses prideful in almost every context. I use proud. I know we are both right but why does it sound so unbearable when he says it. Is it just my bias and preference?

I've always thought Prideful is a negative charateristic in someone - dictionary says Overly convinced of one's own superiority and importance whereas being Proud can be a positive thing - eg he is a very proud father.
