Is this expression right?

'At that time, Newton’s theory was to most scientists as the Bible was to Christians.'

By this sentence, I'd like to tell others the importance of Newton's theory to most scientists was the same as the importance of the Bible to Christians. Am I right?

Hello, Mercurial - and welcome to English Forums. I would do this: At that time, Newton’s theory was for most scientists what the Bible was for Christians.
