Is this correctly worded for past tense?

While the battle had raged, Aurican had fought Crematia until he eventually defeated and drove the red dragon away.

More context might lead me to a different conclusion, but as it stands, I think I'd use simple past for all the verbs in the sentence.

Well I describe the battle in detail in the paragraph before that sentence that's why I though I should use the "had"s in theirs sentence. What do you think?

I guess 'had raged' makes sense, but then the simple past for the rest.
