People is already plural. It's like "children."

The child's request for ...

The children's request for...

The person's request for...

The people's request for...

The people's deman for freedom... [just a noun phrase - requires a verb]

The people demand freedom.

<<Edited to fix my error - yes, I meant "Requires a verb," not "

Grammar Geek The people's deman for freedom... [just a noun phrase - requires a subject] The people deman freedom.
Or a predicate - The people's deman for freedom [is unreasonable.]
