Another blunder of mine. How could I be so careless!

i don't know who's telling you guys the correct word.. but if i'm not mistaken "had" is always followed by past participle form of the verb... why did you say so that "we had to stay" is the correct?.... please explain it to me clearly... thank you in advance

To have to do indicates compulsion and have is followed by the present infinitive, not a past participle. In your original post had is used as the sentence is in the past tense.

I have to go now. = I must go now.
