Is this correct use of "ultimately"?

The black dragon and her servants attempted to stop the plainsman before he returned to his village of Que-Shu, however, they ultimately failed.

By the way, is a dragon female? Although it's a mythological creature and I'm not an expert in it, I would use it. If, for some reason, I couldn't use it, I would use he, not she. I may be wrong, though...
