is this correct use of the expression "in ruins"? I want it to be clear that they found the statue broken

However, all they found was the statue of Mishakal in ruins and the Blue Crystal Staff devoid of its divine magic.

I don't like it. I actually misread it the first time and thought it was found in the ruins of a temple or something like that. "In pieces" works.
