Is this correct: Changing the default application settings IS/ARE not recommended.

Which one sound more natural? Also I'm a little bit confused about the verb agreement. I'm not sure if it should be "is" or "are". For me, it sounds like the subject is "changing" and it goes with "is" but I may be wrong.


1. Changing the default application settings is not recommended.

2. Changing the default settings of the application is not recommended.
