Is this correct and do I need to add the "had"?

While Barrabus’s attacks were largely ineffectual against the umber hulks, Alegni slew two of the monstrous creatures single-handed, which won him the admiration of the city’s people. The umber hulks’ assault was repulsed, but the beasts "had" killed many of the citizens of Neverwinter.
