Can you explain the reason you are writing this? You could try posting in the Idioms section of this website.

"was a real bear" - sounds okay but it isn't too common.

You ask if it sounds natural, but "natural' depends on your characters if it is a play, for example. That's great!-- pretty tough--intimidating (this particular combination of adjectives does not sound very natural to the context or the character, to my ears)

*suggestions: "Oh, really?----pretty tough -- I had trouble/struggled with that one.
