Is this comma placed there correctly?

"Social decorum sets down appropriate social behavior and propriety, and is thus linked to notions of etiquette and manners."

I'm new to this but I saw this sentence on Wikipedia, and I think that the comma there is unnecessary

Thank you. My own sentence was "I'm new to this but I saw this sentence on Wikipedia, and I think that the comma there is unnecessary." I thought that both sentences were independent clauses therefore I put the comma there.
