Is this as a native speaker would write it?
Is this as you native speakers would write it?
The baby started crying, so the mother took it up to comfort it, but it was inconsolably.
Would you leave out any of the commas?

This is possible but strange. You make the baby seem like an object. It would be more natural to use her, him or them.
