Is this an inverted sentence or not?

Could anyone please tell me if the first sentence is an inversion or not?

Parallel with this mistrust of nature was the symbolizing faculty of the medieval mind. We who are heirs to three centuries of science can hardly realize a state of mind in which all material objects were thought of as symbols of spiritual truths or episodes in sacred history.

Also, is "parallel" here a noun or an adjective?

Thanks in advance.
