IS THIS A THESIS STATEMENT?
I got stuck writing a simple paper and I'm not even sure if this is a thesis statement. It's sad, yes, but help me out! The essay is about the steps to making macaroni and cheese. It doesnt matter if its a GOOD thesis statement... but I need to know its a thesis statement at all.
THESIS:
Although there are many ways to make macaroni and cheese, my steps are simple and clear ways to prepare something delicious and fun for the whole family.

Change it to "follow these simple and clear steps to prepare" instead of "my steps are simple and clear ways" -- but yeah, sure. Your thesis statement is that you are going to show how to make good mac & cheese. It's as much a thesis statement as saying you're going to demonstrate how the 10 Amendment can be used as the basis of an argument against federalized health care.

Im not doubting you, just confirming. It's supposed to be a really basic paper, and I suprisingly havent written anything so basic in a very long time. The paper continues with an anecdote and then extremely descriptive (and fluffly) steps to making the Mac and then a conclusion with the family's satisfaction.

It's been a long time since I've had to write academic papers as well, but from what I remember, a "how-to" paper doesn't so much have a thesis/thesis statement as a description of what the result will be.
