I hope I can learn a great deal and will offer me assurance on my future choices. I feel it would be an invaluable experience that would help me refine my skills.

My name is **** and I am writing to apply for an internship* with (name of company) for a the second week in March, 2012. (or the first or third or fourth week if your schedule is not flexible - otherwise say "any week in March, 2012)

I am currently a Year 10 student at ******** School for Girls in ********* and I’m studying for my GCSEs. I am taking GCSEs in Drama, Art and Design, Textiles, History and Spanish. I have a particular interest in English and Spanish and I particularly aspire to be a journalist in foreign affairs.

I am certain that I can learn a great deal working with you and that doing so will assist me in making future key career choices and definitely help me expand my skills set.

Thank you for your consideration and I look forward to hearing from you.

* Internship versus work placement. The term "work placement" (especially in the world of publishing and journalism) is antiquated and not really used. I'm certain that the person opening your letter would, in all liklihood, prefer seeing current expressions rather than old ones. After all, "intern" and "internship" are derived from "trainee, apprentice, novice, beginner."

"Work placement" really means very little comapred with the precision of "internship".
