Is this a grammatical glitch, gleaned from one page of the book "the World is Flat"
on page 32 of Thomas L Friedman "The World is Flat", an international bestseller, I found the following sentence puzzling in terms of
how that sentence makes a grammatical sense. Any help or comments would be welcome.
The issue for me is why there is a singular form of verb for the sentence beginning with "One is American helath-care consultants" despite its being followed by plural nouns like health care consultants
, whereas in the second sentence, the verb is in plural form where the sentence begins with "the other , he said, are American investment banks and financial services companies, which often need to prepare glossy pamphelts with graphs to illustrate ..."
I really appreciate any help on this puzzling grammatial issue.

Poorly edited text, I think. It should read either:
One [e.g.type of customer] is American health-care consultants, who often need lots of numbers crunched and PowerPoint presentations drawn up.
The other [ i.e. type], he said, is [American investments banks and financial services companies]

So, the rule here so called agreement between subject and verb is that when one or the other as subject, even hough followed by plural objects like American health care consultants or American investment banks and financial services companies, it should be singular, unless the subject itself is plural like the others as the example you used.
