Is this a good use of "nevertheless"?

In turn, Gilthanas did not trust Eben, which turned out to be accurate after the warrior betrayed the group to Verminaard. Nevertheless, Gilthanas and the Heroes of the Lance successfully freed the prisoners from the fortress and defeated Verminaard.

It's easily inferred from those two sentences that they managed to free the prisoners despite the betrayal. So, yes, nevertheless is fine.
