Essay & Composition Writing

Is this a good thesis and definition?

For my english essay I am writing a comparitive argumentative essay synthesizing 4 different texts.

Thesis: This paper will argue that, society consistently establishes unattainable standards through media, culture, and social environment which may drive ordinary people to feel dissatisfaction with the natural body. Such resentment often results in enduring drastic measures such as changing aspects of the body in an attempt to achieve elusive goals and suit one’s personal desires. The body, a form of social control, is directly affected by a society’s ideal image of how individuals should look, act, and feel. Angela Orend-Cunningham argues that often changes to the body are made in order to go against social conformity (2003). Yet for Kathy Davis “the body – as well as our beliefs about it – is subject to enormous variation, both within and between cultures” (2001). The body can be altered according to personal needs and desires. For Thomas Schramme the body should be permitted to be shaped according to individual tastes and do not harm the body enough to justify interventions (2011). However, these individual desires are often driven by outside forces such as media, leading populations to conform to western standards (McClelland 2011). For Angela Orend-Cunningham the body, as well as everything in society, has become commodified (2003). Quoting Michel Foucault, Angela Orend-Cunningham says that “the body is inherently a social creation that is shaped by ideaology” (2003).

Hi, I don't know what level you are studying at. But here are a couple of quick, general comments. A thesis is a proposition, a position, that you will take, and defend or prove in your paper.

  • Yours seems very long and thus not succinct or clear enough in my opinion.
  • You spend a lot of words in describing and quoting the views of 4 other people.
