Information Technology jobs' going overseas to China, India or some Asian subcontinent is a topic that brings about feelings of anxiety and deceit among those directly affected by these economic changes. After all, Americans are losing high paying jobs because corporations are cutting back expenses on technology. In the first place, why are people employed and why are jobs going overseas? I will explore these two questions in my body paragraphs. People are employed because companies maintain or increase profits; when customers spend less corporations must look at alternatives to create profits. And that alternative means slashing jobs here in the United States for cheaper labor costs in other countries.
Technology jobs are going to cheaper skilled workers overseas. In an article published July 14 2003 “More tech jobs going overseas” Arizona Central Newspaper reports “27,000 technology jobs moved overseas in 2000, according to a November study by Forrester Research.” And the result is the negative socioeconomic impact on real people unable to cope with the loss of lucrative employment. Unemployment as a result of this is the root cause of anxiety and deceit towards the technology sector.
This model of jobs leaving United States has been in place since the 1960s. In “Factories Move Abroad, as Does US Power” The New York Times reports on August 17, 2003 “…the workforce employed in manufacturing has fallen to 11 percent from 30 percent in the 1960s.” Jobs in technology and manufacturing are going overseas.
This situation of jobs migrating overseas was painfully clear in the late 1980s when the movie “Roger and Me” indicts capitalist American corporations as profit mongers at the expense of American jobs. This lesson heeds the inevitable affect of a capitalistic economy.
In a capitalistic economy, corporations must maintain and increase profit margin to remain competitive. Increased profits for American companies have lured jobs overseas creating a global manufacturing environment.
Corporate profits allowed a new era of spending among companies. And the technology sector of our dynamic economy got a big boost. Beginning in the early 1990’s Corporate America began spending money to upgrade their infrastructure in order to maintain profits. That spending created high paying Information Technology jobs. In fact, the spending was so aggressive America had to import skilled workers to meet the veracious demand for technology upgrades. Because of technology spending, America had the longest economic growth in history.
Technology upgrades enable corporations to efficiently create and distribute their product while collecting their profits. Due to this efficacy, the demand in the marketplace became stagnate. In simple terms, technology within American Companies allowed companies to deliver goods and service at a rate which exceeded the demand of the market place, thereby, creating excess goods and services and a failure to increase profits.
When American corporations do not make profits they must find alternatives to increase or maintain profits. Because profitable companies will hire workers to expand and maintain profit margins, American companies must first find ways to maintain profits. Once corporations have profits, they will have money to spend the American worker will find employment in a new sector of the economy.
