Punishment vs. Discipline
When thinking about the words discipline and punishment, several common things come to mind about both; several differences also come to mind. Discipline, a technique used by any authority figure, such as a mom, dad, teacher, or coach, helps someone of lower authority such as a child learn how to behave in a socially acceptable way. This technique is a positive way of learning, which has benefits for the long run in the child's life; it reinforces positive thinking and acting, and helps build self-esteem.
However, punishment is a form of discipline that helps to control unacceptable behaviour. There are physical and psychological ways of punishing a child that may not always end in a positive way; psychically hitting or spanking a child may or may not lead to abuse, while isolating them in their room away from everything else can lead to psychological distress and emotional damage. Both discipline and punishment are attempts or teaching tools used to create proper behaviour, usually reinforced at an early age. (Word count, 171)
