In my language, there is a slang - Playing the piano for a cow
Since a cow will never understand, enjoy or even know what a piano is, but you still put an effort in or spend time playing the piano for the cow, which is a completely waste of time and effort. It implies that someone is talking to or explaining something to someone who will never understand what you are talking about.
