Is there any rules about using he/she/it when talking about organic/inorganic objects?

I'm not sure whether to use he/she or it when talking about a small animal like a dog or a spider.
And I even saw people saying "She's beautiful" when they are talking about inorganic objects like boats. Shouldn't it be "It's beautiful"? Or both ways are correct?

Anonymous Shouldn't it be "It's beautiful"? If you don't know if it's a 'he' or a 'she', then yes, it should be 'it'. Boats are an exception.
