It's not clear to me what you mean by "preceded him in life."
I note that CJ chose to delete "in life." But without it, I'm really scratching my head.
I suspect that people of African decent who preceded him (in life) number in the billions.
On the other hand, the number of physicists of African decent who preceded him in life probably don't number in the millions.
