Is there any difference in meaning between the following two sentences?

Is there any difference in meaning between the following two sentences?
A: He leaned forward slightly to try and hear what they were saying.
B: He leaned forward slightly, trying to hear what they were saying.

To me, sentence A suggests a possibility that something accidental prevented him from hearing.

Sentence B suggests that he managed to hear something. So, am I right?
