Is there any difference between "laud" and "tout"?

Is there any difference between "laud" and "tout"?

Laud v - to praise sb/sth,

while, Tout v - to praise excessively

But i still don't seem to understand if there's any difference or not?

"tout" has mercenary connotations that "laud" lacks: it usually implies that you are promoting something because you have a vested interest in its success. I don't personally think that "praise excessively" (without any further qualifications) is a particularly good definition of "tout".
