Is there a thing called "on first term"?

Hi,

I wonder if someone can help me out. I'm writing a paper, with the following sentence:

No longer having a pope or priesthood to guide them, the Puritans were now on first terms with God.

But now I'm wondering if the phrase "on first terms" is correct? Or is it any other way that is more correct/better to use?

Thanks!
