Is there a rule for determining the use of an article for "school"?

I am going to make up two sentences below.

(1) Every day, I walk to school.

(2) Every day, I arrive at the school late.

I really don't understand why you omit an article from (1) and put one in (2). Please explain this. Thank you very much.

ansonguy I really don't understand why you omit an article from (1) (1) Every day, I walk to school. School here means an activity where you learn stuff from teachers. With the preposition "to" it takes this meaning.
