Is there a ... in the living room? Is a ... in the living room?

Hello,

What is the difference between:

1a. Is a sofa in the living room?

1b. Is there a sofa in the living room?

2a. A sofa is in the living room. (I would think that this means: a sofa NOT an armchair is in the living room)

2b. There is a sofa in the living room. (I would think that this simply announced the existence of a sofa in the living room).

I can't think of a context for this at all, and it is so unnatural for "Is there a sofa …?" that I have to call it wrong.

Right. Does the living room have a sofa in it?
