is there a grammar or not for ...... ?

Hello Everyone
I Wondered when i read these words :
Detector , Navigator , .......
as i know when we stick "er" at the end of words we'll made them to a doer Like these Examples :
write > Writer
Book > Booker
and why not some words Like Detector use Instead Detecter
and navigator too
is this a grammar?

The suffixes (-er and -or) have the same meaning. There is an old tradition on using -er versus -or.. In general -or is appended to words of Latin origin, and -er to those of English origin.
