Is 'their' necessary?

Everyone was committed to the event in spite of their heavy personal schedules - work, family and other activities - and “gave their all” for the event.

1. Is 'their' necessary?
2. Is it ok to have 'event' repeated?

There is one "their" only but " event" used twice.

How should the sentence be rewritten please?
