Is the word "mate" stressed

It's a calculator, mate.

Where are you from, mate?

Do we pause before saying mate to avoid words to stick together? like calculator mate, office mate which can confuse those who don't use BrE nor some non-natives. I avoid using that word with people whom I was talking with replies "yeah, calculator mate". I didn't pause before saying mate.

mosja Do we pause before saying mate to avoid running words to stick together? A slight pause is typical, yes, with a sort of steady tone throughout the word 'mate', stressing it about as much as the preceding syllable, but whether the reason is to avoid running words together is debatable. More likely it's to make our phrasing conform to the meaning of the sentence.
