Mister MicawberWhat does that mean?
I really don't know, Mister Micawber. The quote was given by an anonymous writer. I find it hard to associate 'field general' with 'love' being the conqueror... The meaning is murky, you know.

The literary conceit is 'conquer / general'. It would be clearer if the writer merely said:

"Love may conquer all," an anonymous writer has stated, "but it needs time as its general."
