Is the use of 'which' correct in referring to the legion?

Faros and his army later confronted the Warhorse Legion, under the command of Maritia, which the rebels defeated and forced to retreat.

It is confusing. I think this is a case of needing revision because in this isolated sentence, at least, we aren't sure who is who. ) defeated somebody.

It is confusing. I think this is a case of needing revision because in this isolated sentence, at least, we aren't sure who is who. It appears that Maritia commanded the Legion, and some rebels (where do they fit in?) defeated somebody. Perhaps it's time for two sentences without so much explanation in one.
