Made-up story:

She was a woman of virtue. She grew up in XXX in a single-parent household and grew up to be a successful businesswoman. Or should it be this?

Or possibly this? Eventhough I introduced this sentence for correction, I am not sure why a past perfect tense is needed. I hope for the best response.
