Is the structure of this sentence parallel?

it is felt that a "teacher" should be approachable, yet a person who induces a healthy sense of fear and respect in "their" students.

A teacher is a singular, whereas their is a plural pronoun. Shouldn't both be either plural or singular?

From a strictly grammatical viewpoint, yes. Their is common in informal language, though.
