Is the sentence said grammatically?

One sentence from NPR
So what Hoffman eventually did was change careers or at least he's trying to.
here ," change careers" is very strange. One sentence should not have two verbs.
Or this is just a spoken mistake?

On sentence, like the one I am writing now, can have several verbs and both make sense and be grammatically correct.

If "change careers" is a common phrase , then "at least he's trying to" becomes strange becuase of "try to do sth"
"at least he's trying to" means "at least he's trying to change careers", where change is apparently a verb.
