Is the sentence good?

Hey. Is the sentence good? Is it necessary to include (at him)?

Before Theo could react, Fred came charging (at him) with the ax above his head and swung it down, chopping Theo's head in half.

Hi Either is OK. I would put it in, since it gives us the idea of an attack on Theo earlier in the sentence, which is good. Without it, we have to wait another dozen words before we know why Fred is charging around like that.
