Is the sentence correct?

I read this sentence from a website but I don't quite understand the meaning of "he is years old".

-- "For every birthday Tom gets as many teddies as he is years old on that day."

Please help check if it is correct?

And I tried to rewrite that sentence like this: "For every birthday Tom gets as many teddies as his age on that day."

Is my sentence correct and same meaning with the sentence above?
