Is the sentence correct

They drove the man out, beating.

Is this a correct sentence to mean that they were beating the man and drove him out. I'm guessing it, keeping in my head sentences like 'She came downstairs, leaping amd singing around.'

Is my sentence correct?

Please help!

zany banana 409 They drove the man out, beating. It requires an object - although 'to beat' can be intransitive in some cases, it is normally used with a noun or pronoun, in this case 'him'. zany banana 409 She came downstairs, leaping amd singing around.

  • zany banana 409 They drove the man out, beating.
  • It requires an object - although 'to beat' can be intransitive in some cases, it is normally used with a noun or pronoun, in this case 'him'.
  • zany banana 409 She came downstairs, leaping amd singing around.
  • This doesn't sound natural - rearrange the verbs to get: She came downstairs , singing and leaping around.
  • This way the adverb 'around' goes with the correct verb ('leaping') and 'singing', which doesn't need any modification, stands alone.
