Does but mean in spite of this or mean on the other hand in the sentence?

No, I said that 'although' means 'on the other hand'. That's how I would interpret the intent of the sentence.

You have to understand that each word in English has its own unique meaning and special contexts of use. The word but has its own meaning and usage. It is inconceivable to define that word using other words, because you will be going on and on and eventually get into a cycle. If say but is defined by in spite of, then what does define in spite of. You can't even say tha
