Is the placement of 'once' correct in this sentence?

I would like to know if the placement of 'once' is correct here: "It will never be like it was once". I think it's not and would say it like this "It will never be like it once was". But someone I'm in a discussion in insists the first sentence is the correct one, as neither one of us is a native speaker I am hoping someone more qualified will settle the disput. Thank you!
