Is "the" needed here?

Please indicate to me whether "the" is needed here. And why? Thanks.

1. When I was in school, i was a committee member of the Computer Club as well as the member of English Society.

In my opinion, the first "the" is optional, unless it's part of the official name. The second one must be changed to "a," which may not be omitted. ) I'm a member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

In my opinion, the first "the" is optional, unless it's part of the official name. The second one must be changed to "a," which may not be omitted. ("The" implies there's only one member.)

I'm a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. "The" is never used here, except by the misinformed.

Much as I hate to disagree, I would find the sentence without the first "the" to read very oddly.

(But I completely agree that it's "a member"!)

I agree with you, GG, but I'm unable to come up with a rule that explains which organizations sound better with the "the." Any ideas?
