Is 'the' needed before the a geographical name?

It is confusing, I have learned "the' is needed in geography, but many times, people do not use it and it is always omitted on the map, please tell me which is correct.

in the USA

in the People's Republic of China

the Strait of Gibraltar

the Straits of Gibraltar (is 's' needed?)

It takes up too much room. The more words you put on the map, the more difficult it is to see the features shown on the map.
