Is ‘the’ needed?

Many people, I believe, vividly remember being moved or thrilled by (the) books they read when they were little.

Should I include ‘the’ in this sentence? If so, could you tell me why that is so?

Though commonly used to describe youth/age, "little" isn't the best choice.
