Is 'the' necessary?

In Japan, due to the nuclear accident triggered by the Great East Japan Earthquake, more than 100,000 people in Fukushima left their beloved hometown against their will to take shelter in an evacuation area.

Is 'the' necessary?

Thanks.

.. having said that, English is not consistent here:

- I was at Glastonbury Festival
