Is the native British English tough for Americans?

I thik American English and British English are a little bit different.

Approximately what percent of the local English that two native Londoners talk do you think Americans understand?
Approximately what percent of the local English that two native Irishmen talk do you think Americans understand?

Except for things like Cockney rhyming slang (or other slang we just don't know) 100% for Londoners, and 98-99% for Irish speakers. The only time in my life I could not understand a native speaker of English was listening to some young men from northern Scotland play Trivial Pursuit.

Oh, 99.5%!
How surprising!

I'm Japanese and I understand about only 5 or 10 percent of the two native Japanese who live in the town more than 1,000 kilometers away from my hometown speak in their local Japanese. That isn't, I suppose, becasue of lack of my Japanese comprehension ability but because their Japanese is quite different from mine.

I'm an American, and I consider them very different. Of course, the language is basically the same, as an American can read any book by a British author. Where you see the difference is when an American tries to join in the conversation with a bunch of Brits. He won't know the right thing to say in various situations, and he might as well be with a bunch of people speaking a foreign tongue. Si
