Is the line natural?

Hi. Is the underscored line natural in the conversation? Thank you.

Bartender: What's wrong?

Man: Why would something be wrong?

Bartender: You've been sitting here drinking for a couple hours. It looks pretty intense.

Man: It does?

Bartender: Yeah. So what's wrong?

Man: My girl just left me.

Bartender: Sorry to hear that.

It doesn't sound right to me. I'm not used to using "intense" in that way.

I might say "serious" instead or change the whole sentence to "Why so glum?".
