Is the comma optional in this sentence?

The biography I'm reading now says that Marie Antoinette was "a marionette, whose strings were mainly pulled by her powerful mother."

If you are giving a direct quotation, give it exactly as it was originally written. Don't start correcting what you think are errors made by the original writer. So, include the comma.
