Is the comma optional?

Our teacher said to us, "Now, please close your eyes."

Our teacher said to us, "Now, close your eyes."

I would put a comma after "Now" in the first sentence? But is the comma optional in the second sentence?

Thanks.

tamguatlay But is the comma optional in the second sentence? It depends on your intent. The comma sets off 'now' as a kind of interjection; without it, 'now' means 'at this time'.
