is the comma in this sentence correct?

It was pretty awesome, hearing Zack and Miri come to life for the first time.

Wasn't this discussed in another thread just recently? It really would not be unusual to say "It was pretty awesome hearing (something)".

I don't remember the specific discussion. In regard to my choice, I feel that hearing grabs readers' attention away from 'come to life', the true reason for the joyful exclamation.

I see it differently. If it can be said that any significant difference exists, the use of "hearing" (rather than "to hear") tends to enhance the idea of "come to life", in my opinion. Somehow it sounds less "clinical" to me.
